ProQuest LLC, PHD/HEA Dissertation, University of Phoenix
This research study explored through an embedded case study how selected Non-tenure Track Faculty (NTTF) in Puerto Rico perceived governance and how they participated in the decision-making process. The theoretical framework of this research was based on the principles of shared governance and the Social Exchange Theory. To explore how NTTF perceived faculty governance, and how they participated in the decision-making process, the researcher examined institutional documents and conducted semi-structured interviews with 10 NTTF members from five different faculties. Results showed that NTTF perceived the governance structure as hierarchical, well defined, and complex. It also was discovered that NTTF had direct participation in governance at the academic department level and indirect participation at higher levels in the governance structure of the university. At the departmental level, NTTF took decisions that were mostly related to the curriculum. Finally, it was found that NTTF participation in the decision-making process circumscribed to departmental decisions. Participants perceived their opinions were not that important for administrators and had little influence in their faculties and the institution. Recommendations for further study included exploring NTTF lack of knowledge about institutional regulations pertaining to their role in academic governance; examining their perceptions about not being heard and their desire to have a tenured position; investigating administration points of view about NTTF; and examining gender inequity amongst NTTF.
