AERA Online Paper Repository, Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (San Antonio, TX, Apr 27-May 1, 2017)
This study identifies trends in teacher victimization between 1993 and 2012. We analyze rates of verbal and physical abuse toward teachers, comparing teachers at public and private schools and male and female teachers. Public school teachers experience more threats and attacks than their private school counterparts. However, those private school teachers who have been attacked experience a higher number of attacks than their public school counterparts who have also been attacked at any point in the same time period. Trends indicate that the number of attacks and threats toward teachers has gone up since 2007. These trends help to inform theories related to the increase or decrease of teacher victimization and set the stage for a larger study to come.
