Love in Supervision

ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, William James College
Participating in supervision is part of enhancing therapeutic work and the supervisory experience can have a meaningful impact on the professional development of psychologists in training. Supervision helps prepare psychology graduate students to hone their skills as they become professionals. There is currently a lack of information regarding how supervisors and supervisees discuss non-romantic and non-sexual love between a supervisee and their client. The aim of this study is to gain an understanding of how psychology graduate students in training discuss experiencing non-romantic and non-sexual love with their clients in supervision, and how supervisors respond. The research was composed of a survey that asked both supervisees who were graduate students in psychology and supervisors who had supervised graduate students, about their opinions discussing the topic of love based on four fictional vignettes. Supervisors and supervisees had varying responses, but overall, supervisors seemed more comfortable to openly discuss love for clients in supervision. The respondents were asked for any additional comments and many wrote about the importance of this topic and the lack of education about how to talk about love in supervision. Given the low sample size and the varying responses, it seems imperative to incorporate more education to both psychology supervisors and graduate students about the importance of discussing love in supervision.
