Age versus Education: A Qualitative Case Study on Older Women in the Workplace
Grandberry, Sandi
ProQuest LLC, PHD/HEA Dissertation, University of Phoenix
This dissertation is an exploratory case study of senior women who work at an unnamed State Legislature at all levels from clerical to elected legislator. The senior women explained why they remain in the workforce and how education impacts that decision. The older women in this study explain remaining in the workforce for one of two reasons: financial support and/or insurance, or they love what they do and continue working to make a difference. They did not consider education as valuable for personal career advancement. The women in this study are working in a legislative body and their view of formal education for women after the age of 55, as opposed to general lifetime learning, has important ramifications. The study includes data on the limited legislative action supporting educational opportunities for seniors during the years when the study was completed.
