Reflecting on Supervision: The Views, Opinions, and Experiences of New Jersey Early Intervention Practitioners
Sullivan, Lorri Ann
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Fielding Graduate University
This mixed methods study explored the views, opinions, and experiences New Jersey early intervention (EI) practitioners have about supervision, and in particular, reflective supervision/consultation (RS/C). The study included quantitative data from an online survey and qualitative data from focus group interviews. EI practitioners are often unprepared and unsupported to deal with the emotional content of infant-family work. RS/C has become recognized as a professional development activity which can provide emotional support to practitioners in their work with infants, young children, and families ( Gilkerson & Shahmoon-Shanok, 2000; Heffron & Murch, 2010; Heller & Gilkerson, 2009; Parlakian, 2002; D. Weatherston, Weigand, & Weigand, 2010). The views, opinions, and experiences EI practitioners have about supervision are not often represented in the EI or supervision literature. The results of the study provided data to fill a void in the supervision, RS/C, and EI literature. Several key themes relating to the views, opinions, and experiences of practitioners emerged from the data: Natural Environments and the Emotional Challenges, Professional Preparedness, Professional Collaboration, and Reflecting on Supervision. Finally, the data showed when the focus of supervision was reflective, a statistically significant relationship to satisfaction with supervision was confirmed.
