Employee and Manager Engagement in the Admissions Office: Undergraduate Recruitment and Admissions Processing Staff
Miles, Reginald H.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northern Arizona University
Employee engagement in higher education is very important, particularly in the Office of Admissions where staff interact with their managers, teams, external groups, and prospective students. Office of Admissions staff work with prospective students and their families by educating the admissions process and help navigate the paths to higher education into one of the nation's institutions. For individuals who serve as the face of the institution (undergraduate recruitment) and those who work behind the scenes to ensure students meet admissions requirements and render a decision (admissions processing), it is important that staff are engaged and feel supported by their managers due to the historic turnover of these positions in college admissions. This action research study was designed to describe how undergraduate recruitment and admissions processing staff engage with their manager in the Office of Admissions at a public, Research I institution located in the Southwest United States, Salem University (a pseudonym). The goal of the research was to describe how the undergraduate recruitment and admissions processing staff understand employee engagement and their perception of their managers' level of engagement. The study used a web-based, online survey containing 28 questions composed of multiple choice on a Likert-type scale. This research study described how Office of Admissions staff can be more engaged in the workplace specifically in the employee-manager relationship. The results of this research study indicate a need for additional admissions staff training on work-life balance focused on employee-manager communication and flexibility along with training on the admission funnel based on the goals and practices in the Office of Admissions at Salem University.
