Service-Learning for Community Building: Empowering Students to Serve the Public Good
Stallworth-Clark, Rosemarie
AERA Online Paper Repository, Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (Washington, DC, Apr 8-12, 2016)
This study, conducted in a Business/Technology course in a large public high school in Southeastern USA, Fall Semester, 2014, supports the use of Service-Learning in the schools for empowering students to serve the public good. Ninety-two students created classroom "DREAM TEAMS" for researching and seeking solutions for selected community problems presented in the DREAM OF A NATION text and media resources. Substantiated conclusions drawn from the collected student and teacher data indicate that students who actively participated in the Service Learning projects increased academically in technical skill proficiencies as well as in those basic social-emotional skills (empathy, compassion, and caring) and democratic worldviews that foster respect for people of all races and cultures.
