Adapted Physical Educators' Views of Assistive Technology in Working with Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder
McIntire, Brandon
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, New Mexico State University
The disability of autism and the use of assistive technology is a new and emerging issue for current and future adapted physical educators. One of the fastest-growing populations in schools and society today consists of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). To adequately determine if adapted physical education teachers are knowledgeable about best practices regarding ASD and AT, this study focused on the current knowledge and training about assistive technology, students with ASD, and highly qualified standards that should be attained by each adapted physical educator. The study was conducted through two focus group sessions with current APE teachers from a large southwestern city. The teachers provided their perceptions of working with students who have ASD and the use of AT. The results of the study indicated that there was a lack of higher education training within the exceptionality category of ASD, the importance of having patience when working with students who have ASD, and the lack of pedometer use by the teachers, due to various circumstances.
