Are Student Evaluations of Teaching Gender-Biased?
Eouanzoui, Kianré B.; Jones, James A.
AERA Online Paper Repository, Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (San Antonio, TX, Apr 27-May 1, 2017)
Online student evaluations of teaching (SETs) are commonly used by students to provide anonymous feedback concerning their overall experience with the course content and their instructors. However, concerns have been raised that the gender of the instructor and student may interact causing more effective instructors to receive lower ratings. At a midsized, Midwestern university, 267 instructors completed a short survey asking them to characterize the gender makeup of their classes and department, their gender, and to estimate the typical ratings received. Overall, females reported higher ratings regardless of gender makeup of the students or department, and both male and female instructors reported higher ratings when the gender distribution of their department was not predominately of one gender.
