When Girls Think outside Their Comfort Zones: A Second Look at Digital Literacies of Urban Middle School Adolescent Girls
Perry, Tonya B.
AERA Online Paper Repository, Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (Washington, DC, Apr 8-12, 2016)
In the 21st century, adolescent girls use the power of the pen (and digital literacies) for the purpose of self-expression, personal enrichment, and academic requirements. This study examines in-depth the types of writing/literacies that girls participate in school and out-of-school. The results of this study indicate that, despite the extensive use of writing and other literacies by both male and female students, girls tend to consume the literacies, whereas boys tend to "create" literacies for themselves. Girls' consumer approach to the literacies can impact the limited types of skills they develop academically. Five years later, with more digital literacies created, girls are still participating in the use of technology, but this study examines if they are using technology differently that they were five years ago.
