The Rise in Student-Athlete Graduation Success Rate versus the General Student Population: A Case Study
Batichon, Claudia
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
Student-athletes are graduating at a faster rate than the general student population at NCAA Division I institutions. The general problem addressed in this study is the graduation success rate of student-athletes versus the federal graduation rate of all students. The specific problem addressed in this study is the rising rate of student-athletes that are graduating at Division I institutions in comparison to the general student population. The purpose of this qualitative study, using a case study interviewing method, is to explore support methods utilized by student-athlete academic services in comparison to academic support approaches provided to the general student population, as perceived by the student-athlete and the student-athlete academic advisor. In a qualitative research design, six Division I academic advisors and three student athletes will provide their unique perspectives on the benefits and challenges of academic advising centers in helping students organize their education. For the purpose of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting the collected data, to understand the phenomenon of the student-athlete and the academic advisors' perspective of the graduation gap, a qualitative research method was believed to be appropriate. The appropriate method for data collection includes the use of a case study interview method, which includes student-athletes and academic advisors. By seeking data, from the perspective of the student-athletes and the academic advisors, who both comprehend academic advising services, new information about the academic gaps that exist will be revealed and understood. Therefore, this qualitative study is designed to give an understanding of the reasons why student-athletes are graduating at a higher rate than the general student body.
