Cultural Curriculum of the Home: Composing Mestizaje Epistemologies
Calderon-Berumen, Freyca
AERA Online Paper Repository, Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (San Antonio, TX, Apr 27-May 1, 2017)
Latina immigrant women have personal lived experiences that inform and affect the ways they interact with the world on a daily basis and have shaped their personal and cultural identities. Because of those experiences, they have also developed particular ways of knowing, being, and doing that form and guide their ways of mothering. Drawing on the Delgado Bernal, et.al, (2006) notion of pedagogies of the home, this study presents the themes participants described as their pedagogies of the home: language, family bonds, educación, and cultural consciousness. The findings suggest that Latina immigrant women create and develop a cultural curriculum of the home that aims at embracing personal and cultural identity, thus calling for finding alternate culturally responsive practices.
