Predictors of Student Veteran Adaptation and Success in College

Transitioning from the military to civilian life can be challenging for student veterans, especially when adjusting to civilian life. Dealing with life stressors, and connecting with others becomes increasingly difficult when student veterans suffer from poor mental health. Research suggests that student veterans appear to be mature and academically focused when compared to civilian students. However, student veterans may still find it difficult to adjust to college. Social and emotional support from friends, family and colleagues and increased hardiness, have been found to contribute to positive coping and academic success. In this study of 92 participants, five simultaneous multiple regression analyses were conducted to predict if nine independent variables (administration support, advising support, peer support, having multiple roles in college, faculty support, hardiness, life stressors, social support, and family functioning) predicted performance in the five independent variables (GPA, Academic Adjustment, Social Adjustment, Personal-Emotional Adjustment, and Goal Commitment-Institutional Attachment Subscale). Life Stressors was the only statistically significant predictor of Personal-Emotional Adjustment to college. Findings suggest that when one is not experiencing life's stressors, one can have a healthy personal and emotional adjustment to college. Limitations of the study included high dropout rates, a modest sample size, and the self-reported GPA may not have been answered accurately.
