Retired Urban School Principals: Why They Stayed
Aaron, Shanita V. Brown
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Concordia University Chicago
Principal turnover continues to be a problem in schools today, and urban schools experience principal turnover at the highest rate. There has been an abundance of research on turnover of school principals, yet minimal research on retention of urban school principals. This qualitative study used semi-structured interviews with retired urban school principals who remained in their position for a minimum of 5 years to gain their perspectives on why they stayed. A small number of retired urban school principals from Ohio were interviewed using a basic qualitative study, which allowed the research to uncover the participants' experiences and the meaning the principals attributed to their experiences. Interviews were conducted by phone at each principal's availability, and any follow-up questions were sought during the interviews if clarity was needed. The interviews were audio recorded, transcribed, and analyzed for the study. Four themes unfolded from the data including relationships, same goals as the district office, student success, and commitment despite the challenges. Each of the themes related to the job embeddedness theory in categories of organizational links, community links, organizational fit, and organizational sacrifice these findings show that the principals in the study were embedded in their positions thus leading to their longevity.
