Online Learning Motivation within the U.S. Army e-Learning Culture: A Quantitative Study
Mercer, Sean Patrick
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
Online learning motivation is a significant issue in online learning that is worthy of study to prevent academic performance issues from occurring. This study focuses on online learning motivation with the U.S. Army and their online learning experiences. To inform future organizational decisions with the goal of increasing overall student online learning motivation levels, the specific problem this study addresses is the contributing factors that affect student motivation in a U.S. Army online learning environment. The purpose of this quantitative multiple linear regression study is to identify the predictive effects of online learning attitudes, online learning readiness, and demographic factors on student motivation in a U.S. Army online learning environment. The results of this study provide insight into what the U.S. Army should do to address student motivation problems before they occur. The theory that guides this study is the self-determination theory, which provides a framework for categorizing academic motivation. A survey instrument collected quantitative data consisting of 52 Likert-scale type items for online learning readiness, online learning attitudes, and online learning motivation. The survey instrument also included demographic questions. 103 U.S. Army soldiers attending Civil Affairs courses at Fort Bragg, NC provided complete and valid survey responses. The study required the analyzing the data set in SPSS, and confirming assumptions required for multiple regression analysis. The first research question required producing the regression model that best predicts online learning motivation and, as such, the results of the regression analysis produced an equation of Academic Motivation Scale Score = 40.624 + -3.252(Rank) + -12.174(Age) + 3.257(Online Learning Attitudes Score) + 0.968(Online Learning Readiness Scale Score). The second research question required identifying the most significant predictor, online learning attitude, based on the results of the multiple linear regression analysis.
