Invisible on College Campuses: A Qualitative Study of the Experiences of College and University Administrators with Homeless Students

It is estimated that in the 2015-2016 academic year, there were 58,000 college students who self-identified as homeless on their Free Application for Student Aid application (FAFSA, 2015). Facing a unique set of challenges, homeless college students must find ways to navigate the higher educational system while remaining unseen on college campuses and universities. In fact, due to their invisibility on campuses, homeless college students are often unaware of and are underutilizing support services that may be available to them. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore college and university administrators' experiences with homeless students. The study included 6 participants (2 men and 4 women) from various institutional settings. This study identified 3 main findings: (a) the perceived students' personal barriers, (b) the institutional structures that support academic success, and (c) administrators' perceptions of their roles in fostering resilience. These findings are instrumental in closing the gap in literature, since there are few studies regarding homeless college students from the perspective of college and university administrators.
