Improving Engagement for Distance Learning Students through Non-Face-to-Face Counseling: An Action Research Study
Boboye, Jackie G.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Capella University
The purpose of this study was to explore students' perceptions of their experiences with non-face-to-face counseling at a California community college. The use of a mixed methods design provided quantitative and qualitative data surrounding students' perceptions of their experiences in a non-face-to-face counseling program in comparison to those in a face-to-face counseling program at a community college. The research questions were explored using the Trait Hope Scale (THS) and optional counseling open-ended questions to determine how intervention and non-intervention students varied in terms of: (a) course completion rates; (b) completed/up-to-date Student Educational Plans (SEPs); (c) number of student contacts with counselors; and (d) types of services provided, such as graduation check, external transcript evaluation, pre-requisite clearance, transfer, counseling, and follow-up. Frequency tables and cross tabulations were used to analyze the data. A series of comparative analyses revealed that the students varied significantly in terms of access to education plans, contacts with counselors, graduation checks, and transfers. As would be expected, the analyses showed that students with access to non-face-to-face counseling tended to make greater use of each of these services. Findings revealed that both agency and pathways scores decreased significantly following the implementation of non-face-to-face counseling services. Qualitative findings indicated that students perceived non-face-to-face counseling as being a great time management tool.
