ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, Capella University
The focus of the school social worker in the United States is being reshaped to address demographic changes in the school population. School social workers are being asked to respond to issues of cultural diversity currently within the school population that were not addressed in the past. It is not known to what extent school social workers have the specialized knowledge and skills to serve culturally diverse students. Also, it is not known to what extent school social workers impact the educational opportunities of culturally diverse students. The purpose of this research was to explore the characteristics of school social workers with specialized knowledge and skills in the area of cultural diversity and how these characteristics enable school social workers to impact the educational opportunities of culturally diverse students. The study used a sequential, nonexperimental, exploratory, mixed methods design. The quantitative phase of the study used a modified self-administered survey instrument and continuum assessment model. The qualitative phase of the study was a focus group interview with 4 school social workers. The study revealed that cultural diversity as a specialization in school social work is new and all the best practices, skills, and knowledge have not developed it to its fullest potential. Therefore, all that school social workers need to know to reach a level of Expertise remains a work in progress. The study revealed that the impact by school social workers on the educational opportunities of culturally diverse students is significant.
