Factors Influencing Graduation of First-Time, Full-Time College Students in East Texas

ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Dallas Baptist University
There is a national push for college completion. For some students, graduation may be stymied by financial status, in addition to other factors. The current study was conducted through secondary analysis of matching archival datasets from select East Texas institutions on full-time, first-time-in-college students with no previous college experience. The current study examined if there was a relationship of financial identification of need-based or non-need aid to race/ethnicity, gender, institution type, and age. The current study also examined if financial aid identification and other factors for race/ethnicity, gender, institution type and age, impacts graduation. Results indicated that more non-need students graduated. Of the three schools examined, a relationship exists for completion and a student's race/ethnicity. Graduation was higher for females and older students had a higher graduation count. Overall, the four-year private historically Black institutions had a greater percentage of graduates compared to the two-year public institution.
