High School Teachers' Struggles with Integrating Mobile Devices into Curriculum Lesson Plans at the Planning Stage: A Case Study
Ibouhouten, Teresa
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
Technology is progressing at an explosive rate, and schools, which are already behind the times, are struggling to keep pace with the world in which the students will be entering. The problem addressed in this study is that teachers struggle to integrate mobile devices in classroom lessons in ways that are purposeful and not superficial, because teachers lack simple, effective curriculum strategies for technology integration. The purpose of this multiple case study was three-fold: (1) to understand what teachers define as the integration of mobile devices into the classroom, (2) to document the challenges that teachers face integrating mobile devices into the classroom, and (3) to understand the types of effective curriculum planning strategies needed in creating lessons to integrate mobile devices in a purposeful way. The sample was three high school teachers, who taught English, science, and foreign language, respectively. The instruments for this study were an online questionnaire and one submitted lesson plan from each participant that integrated technology into the lesson plan. Findings were that teacher participants are not knowledgeable on the differentiation of technological tools such as hardware and software and there is no solid pedagogical reference for a teacher in choosing what technology to incorporate in lessons, however, teachers are comfortable collaborating with their peers when planning lessons with technology, even though their struggles are linked with their comfort level with the technology and the subject content. Finally professional development was not adequate or helpful to the process of technology planning for curriculum. A recommendation for further research is to repeat the study to include all the middle and high school teachers in the school district.
