ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University
As the population of the United States becomes increasingly diverse, counselors-in-training must be prepared to work with people of all types (Ahmed, Wilson, Henriksen, & Jones, 2011; Sue, Arredondo, & McDavis, 1992). A major element of this preparation is the development of multicultural counseling competence (Richardson & Molinaro, 1996). Sue and Sue (2015) state that White counselors must have an understanding of their own identity, which informs this competence. The purpose of this correlational study was to examine the potential relationship between White racial identity development and multicultural counseling competence of White counselors-in-training at both Predominantly White Institutions and Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Bronfenbrenner's Person-Process-Context-Time model of human development (1993) served as the framework for understanding how White counselors-in-training develop. Results of the study confirmed previous research showing that there is a relationship between White racial identity development and multicultural counseling competence of White counselors-in-training. Findings, limitations, implications on counseling and counselor education, and possible future research are also discussed.
