Cross-Age Peer Mentoring: A Case Study of Resiliency Building Relationships
Rabe, Karyn S.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
This case study describes the synergetic elements within mentoring relationships that allow a bond to develop. Through a single case, a voluntary high school mentoring club in the Western United States, mentoring relationships were analyzed. The study was designed to examine the specific shared elements of mentoring relationships that form the dyadic bond, the words and phrases that mentors use to describe these synergetic features, and the meanings the mentors attach to those words and phrases. Using a case study methodology, data were collected from interviews and documents. The data were analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding to identify categories and themes. The theoretical framework that supports this study includes Bronfenbrenner's bioecological theory of human development, findings from the Kauai longitudinal study on resilience and recovery, and Payne's theory on understanding and working with students who lack resources. The findings showed forming a link and benevolence were the common themes that emerged from the data collected regarding the synergetic elements within the dyads. The implications for educational practitioners that stem from this research include the ability to capitalize on the factors identified to hone mentoring relationships to focus on the building of resiliency.
