Factors Influencing International Doctoral Students' Postgraduate Career Placement Selection

The purpose of this phenomenological narrative study was to explore experiences that influence international students' decisions after graduation regarding location and career selections. Interviews with the eight participants were analyzed to understand the common meaning of their experiences of a concept or phenomenon. Results of the study include the participants in this study decided to stay in the United States mostly due to compelling job offers and family related reasons. Although they like the lifestyle in the United States, it is not a major influencing factor for them to stay in the United States. The participants in this study thought that international students return to their home countries mostly because of family, job, and work permit issues factors. The most challenges experienced were related to work permit, finding employment, and the complicated hiring process. The participants also mentioned a need for career consulting support from the higher education institutions. Implications for practices included recommendations for international students regarding their decisions upon graduation.
