The Impact of Financial, Academic and Demographic Institutional Factors on the Graduation Rate of Male Student Athletes
Milton, Orlando, Jr.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Texas Southern University
This study sought to examine the impact of financial, academic, and demographic institutional factors on the graduation rate of male student athletes. Specifically, this study was concerned with the predictive power of financial (total athletic operating expenses, recruiting expenses, and student aid for athletes), academic (SAT verbal, SAT math, and SAT writing scores), and demographic (total male athletes enrollment, student-to-faculty ratio, and campus setting) institutional factors on the graduation rates of male college athletes participating in sports at Division I institutions. A correlational research design was employed in this study. Three hundred forty six (346) NCAA Division I institutions were selected for this study. The institutions were located throughout the United States in rural and urban areas and defined as public or private, large, medium, and small with various enrollments. Three major null hypotheses were tested in this investigation. All three hypotheses were tested to determine the relationship and predictability among financial, academic, and demographic institutional factors and the graduation rates of male college athletes. The results showed that financial institutional factors of total athletic operating expenses, recruiting expenses, and student aid for athletes were not found to have a linear relationship to graduation rates. The academic institutional factors had a linear relationship found with the graduation rates of male college athletes. Finally, there was a linear relationship found between demographic institutional factors and the graduation rates of male college athletes.
