Examining Messenger and Mode: Strategic Communication in Higher Education Recruitment
Breashears, Valerie
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Arkansas at Little Rock
The marketing mantra "know your audience" can be applied when examining higher education student recruitment. With endless avenues for communication and a rise in national data on this topic, exploring what works best for individual institutions is crucial. Disparaging data exists concerning how admissions administrators believe students prefer to hear from institutions and the realities of student preferences. When new recruitment communication strategies were implemented at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in fall 2015 it required an assessment of effectiveness. The posttest-only two-group randomized experimental design will be employed for this proposed quantitative study analyzing recruitment cycle progression from customer relationship management (CRM) campaign data. In this study, the researcher will examine how the communication messenger and mode affects recruitment funnel progression and event attendance. This study will analyze the effects of communication messenger and mode on recruitment funnel progression, to include event attendance, short message service (SMS or text messages), email, and telephone call campaigning. The research design provides methods to investigate email messenger of communications by coding groups to receive email communications from either the University administrative office or a current student at the University. The research design also provides methods to investigate secondary mode effects of SMS and telephone calls modes of communication.
