Rurality, Food Insecurity, Disability, among Other Things: One Poststructural Account of Power and Affectual Materials in an Elementary School
Bishop, Tessa E.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Tennessee Technological University
In this poststructural case study, I interviewed eight caretakers, teachers, and administrators from one school in a rural county in a southeastern state in order to think about how the intersection of three different discourses---rurality, food insecurity, and disability---and the power relations among caretakers, teachers, administrators, and structural institutions and ideologies shaped the subjectivities of rural students with special needs who are food insecure. I describe the power relations I encountered during hours of observation and interviews as well as some affectual materials with which I engaged. I also argue that a poststructural case study is theoretically possible and that interviews of participants can be used in a poststructural study.
