Using a Modified Social Story Intervention in the Home Environment for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Its Impact on Family Quality of Life

Families that have children with ASD may experience increased stress due to a variety of factors, one of these factors being managing difficult behaviors. One area of behavioral difficulty that children with ASD experience is transitioning between activities. The Social Story is one intervention that has been studied as a transition support both in the home and school environments. The creator of Social Stories, Carol Gray, has prescribed specific guidelines for this intervention. Although these guidelines are helpful, they do increase the time and resources necessary for the intervention. The current study examined the effectiveness of a modified social story on the perceived intensity of interfering transition behaviors that children with Autism Spectrum Disorders experience on the weekends during novel activities. Participant's teachers read the social story to the children once at school and it was repeated again in the home environment by the parents. A multiple-baseline design was used which included four active participants and one control participant. The results of the study indicated that a modified social story read in the school and home environments was effective for decreasing the perceived intensity of interfering transition behaviors in the home environment. Furthermore, the study indicated that Family Quality of Life indicators increased throughout the intervention for three out of the four active participants. Future research can focus on other interventions that make a positive impact on Family Quality of Life indicators for these families.
