Alaska Performance Scholarship Outcomes Report 2011--Fall 2017
Becker, Gretchen
Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education
The Alaska Performance Scholarship is beginning its eighth year, rewarding students who strive to excel in high school and continue their education in degree and certificate programs. Since the program began in 2011: (1) 17,148 high school students have completed the eligibility requirements for APS; and (2) 7,630 students have used the scholarship to pursue a postsecondary degree or certificate in Alaska. APS students continue to enroll, persist, and complete postsecondary education at higher rates than their peers: (1) 86% of APS-eligible students have enrolled in a postsecondary program, compared with 44% of ineligible Alaska high school graduates; (2) 97% of APS recipients did not need to take developmental coursework at University of Alaska this fall, compared with 74% of non-recipients; and (3) 46% of APS recipients have graduated on time with a degree or certificate, compared with 20% of ineligible Alaska high school graduates. According to a new analysis this year by the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, APS recipients of $10,000 or more earn over $16,000 more in annual wages, on average, than ineligible students working in Alaska.
