Financial Literacy among Military For-Profit Undergraduate Students: A Quasi-Experimental Study
Campbell, Michael W.
ProQuest LLC, EDD/CI Dissertation, University of Phoenix
Military undergraduate students of for-profit education make up roughly four percent of the student population and often experience financial hardships. This research focused on the effectiveness of financial education on these students. This quantitative quasi-experimental study assessed military undergraduate students deployed on a military platform using an 11-question consumer and personal finance multiple-choice assessment. The pre-test/post-test results were analyzed to: 1) indicate the effect of financial literacy training on student achievement; 2) indicate the effect of financial literacy training among male and female military students of for-profit education; and 3) indicate the effect of financial literacy training among different years of service groups within military students of for-profit education. The participants receiving financial literacy training (n = 44), regardless of gender or years of service, elicited a statistically significant increase in post-test scores (Mdn = 18.25, z = 4.973, p < 0.001), compared to the participants in the control group (n = 44), who did not receive financial literacy training (Mdn = 0, z = .683, p = 0.495). The study provided limited evidence on the impact of financial literacy training toward military undergraduate students of for-profit education. The results indicated that no significant differences were found with the years of service or gender, but there is a significant difference on those with and without financial literacy training. Recommendations for future research are to examine how increased time between testing may impact results and gathering qualitative data on student perceptions of financial literacy. Potentially, financial literacy training could have a positive effect on financial knowledge among military students attending undergraduate degree programs at for-profit colleges and universities.
