Depression and Self-Care among Psychology Graduate Students Working with Forensic Populations
Justice, Mara
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology
The purpose of this study was to investigate the self-care and depression rates among psychology graduate students at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology who work with forensic populations. The aim of the study was to examine the relationship between self-care and depression in students who work with forensic populations as well as to compare their depression and self-care scores to those of students who do not work with forensic populations. In this way, we could identify whether working with forensic populations influences the emotional well-being of psychology graduate students. The study examined the data collected using the Reynolds Depression Screening Inventory, the Headington Self-Care and Lifestyle Balance Inventory and demographic scale administered online. The results indicated that students working in forensic settings have significantly higher levels of depression and engage significantly less in self-care compared to students working in non-forensic settings. Furthermore, the correlation between self-care and depression was significantly negative. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
