An Analysis of the Factors Influencing School Counselor Ethical Decision-Making
Brown, Timothy, Jr.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Texas A&M University - Commerce
School counselors frequently face ethical dilemmas. The American School Counselor Association recommends following an ethical decision-making model when dealing with complex ethical issues; however, little research to date addresses if these models are being used, how familiar school counselors are with these models, and whether they knowingly or unknowingly use elements from these models in their ethical decision-making. To address this lack in the literature, the researcher developed the School Counselor Ethical Decision-Making Inventory. The researcher utilized a non-experimental, cross-sectional, survey research design. An exploratory factor analysis (N = 222) yielded a 6-factor solution: graduate training, religion and culture, decision-making models, ranking of importance, consult and brainstorm, and mandatory/universal. Descriptive statistics were analyzed to increase understanding about the different influences on school counselor ethical decision-making. Results suggested school counselors have a low familiarity with ethical decision-making models, but may use elements of those models in their decision-making practices. Results also indicated a deficit in the understanding of multicultural ethical decision-making. Implications and recommendations for school counselors and counselor educators are discussed.
