Ayala Rivera, Tanya Isis
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Universidad del Turabo (Puerto Rico)
Globalization, the Internet, television, and other technological media are all factors that are greatly influencing English learning. Knowing English is no longer considered a luxury, it is even said that whoever does not speak that language would be in a clear situation of disadvantage. Many applications are currently available for users in Spanish, but most programs are available only in English. In the Internet, the amount of information in English far exceeds the information available to Spanish speaking learners. Internet media are very important for the learning and teaching experience especially for the writing process. Blogging is one of these means that students are using nowadays during their writing experience. This study considers blogging as an important tool to help students through their creative writing process. Applying blogging and new technologies in the educational system are considered in this research. The use of technology during teaching and creative writing has caused important changes in the teaching culture. Social networks are considered as a natural environment in which our students develop. The English Program of the Department of Education of Puerto Rico's mission is to develop communicatively competent students in the English language. The program is committed to promoting and facilitating the development of critical and creative thinkers capable of communicating effectively. How to get the student to competently learn the English language skills if the same teaching strategies have been used for years? A phenomenology method was used based on the perceptions of English as a Second Language elementary level teachers regarding the use of blogs as a teaching strategy to enhance creative writing skills in students, thus improving achievement in this area. The researcher used a qualitative design that was used for describing, analyzing, and interpreting shared patterns of behavior, beliefs, and language that were developed in order to collect data. Three research questions guided the study. The data analysis regarding the participants' perceptions confirmed that blogs provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate critical thinking skills and to employ language and writing principles that demonstrate analytical thought and comprehension.
