On Becoming a Positive Leader: The Intersection of Positivity, Leadership, and Service-Learning
Clark, Dennis Robert
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology
I investigated how people experience becoming a positive leader in the context of a service-learning environment. I examined the relationship between positivity, leadership development, and service-learning by exploring in-depth stories of five graduate students who completed a graduate level positive leadership development program at a Lasallian institution. I extracted significant statements from each story and reduced them to common themes that described the students' experiences without losing meaning. Finally, I presented a composite narrative sketch to each participant for member checking to ensure validity within and across their stories. Based on the findings from the research I suggested that a five-phase process exists that describes how people experience becoming a positive leader and that through self-knowledge and passionate pursuit, positive leaders reassess life choices and change the trajectory of their careers and personal lives in unanticipated ways. I conclude that becoming a positive leader is a transformational process with implications for positive leadership development programs, executive coaching, and developing positive leaders.
