Brumfield-Sanders, Tongia M.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
The purpose of this descriptive quantitative study was to explore the perceptions of school safety among middle and high school teachers in rural Louisiana. In order to achieve this objective, a specific research question was formulated pertaining to teacher perceptions. The Safe Communities Safe Schools (SCSS) survey was used to assess teachers' perceptions of school safety and supervision, preparedness, and problem behaviors among students. A total of six schools was selected for this quantitative study. A convenience sample which included teachers from three middle and three high schools located in three rural Louisiana school districts. According to the findings, a significant number of teachers perceived their school to be safe. There were eight measures used from the Safe Communities Safe Schools Staff Survey. These measures were combinations of individual items; for all of these measures, the individual items were rated by the respondents on a scale from 1 to 4. For most measures, a higher score indicates a positive perception in schools in rural Louisiana schools. It is recommended that future researchers include additional stakeholders, such as parents and students within survey, while simultaneously incorporating more school districts in rural Louisiana.
