Schoolwide Positive Behavior Support Tier Two Interventions: Teacher Perspectives on Their Effectiveness
Harrison, Susan
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
Schoolwide positive behavior support (SWPBS) is a framework developed to address negative student behaviors in a less punitive manner than traditional discipline. The majority of research studies addressing SWPBS take place in elementary settings as opposed to secondary. Additionally, the majority of the existing research studies do not take into account staff perspectives. The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological research study was to gather teacher and staff perspectives as to their beliefs of the effectiveness of Tier two behavioral interventions offered at their specific school. As the immediate interventionists, teachers are responsible for maintaining a strong classroom culture to create a sound instructional environment. Their views and perspectives are important to determine effectiveness and sustainability of SWPBS, specifically Tier two interventions. An anonymous questionnaire was delivered via SurveyMonkey to teachers and educational staff at a rural, economically depressed middle school. First, teachers and educational staff members were asked to define SWPBS characteristics and processes. Then, participants were asked to explain how SWPBS characteristics and processes were applied at their specific middle school. The goal of this research study was to determine the effectiveness of Tier two interventions offered at this specific middle school. However, once the responses to the anonymous questionnaire were analyzed, it became clear that staff members were unsure of the purpose of SWPBS and how to best utilize behavior interventions. Future research could include several purposes. One purpose could be additional analysis of SWPBS at the secondary level to determine best practices to implement and sustain. A second purpose could be additional analysis of Tier two behavioral interventions at the secondary level. A third purpose could be professional development strategies for SWPBS implementation at the secondary level.
