Evaluating the Efficacy of a Healthcare Fellowship Certification Program as an Indication of Career Preparedness

Healthcare administration is a complex, multifaceted career path that requires constant adaptation and integration of external guidance. Organizations seeking the most qualified and skilled candidates draw from a multitude of applicants without having a single potential success indicator. The lack of a standard educational background, credentialing, or certification process adds to the confusion. This lack of direction leads to increased costs for organizations in the form of additional training, lost productivity, and increased job turnover. No formal assessment has been conducted regarding the efficacy of existing credentialing programs at predicting the skill and competency of recipients in their roles healthcare administrators. This publication utilizes an exploratory, single-holistic, qualitative case study to explore the efficacy of a single healthcare administrative certification process in providing a valid method of predicting job candidate skill, knowledge base, and efficacy. Participants from the Minnesota Chapter of the ACHE volunteered to participate in the study. Responses were analyzed utilizing "NVivo" 11 Pro software. A key finding involved the lack of recognition for certification programs, which leads to less meaningful value for certification holders and the organizations that invest in their staff through these programs.
