Coping Behaviors of Residence Hall Directors
Wilkes, Ben
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Edgewood College
This mixed-methods study examined tertiary-level residence-hall directors' reported coping behaviors for three systems of stress: environmental, personal, and work. It surveyed a convenience sample of 128 respondents using the Brief COPE scale (Carver, 1997). Reported length of service, genders, and hall populations were matched with 28 types of coping behaviors on 14 scales and two designated types: healthy and unhealthy. This study found a correlation between three RHD demographics and 28 specific coping behaviors. It also found eight strong positive correlations to the number of first-year students living in the RHDs' residence halls. Additionally, it found strong gender differences in the use of drugs and alcohol and self-blame, both of which are unhealthy behaviors. Length of service was not found to correlate with coping behaviors. Female gender was strongly related to unhealthy self-blame as well as unhealthy uses of alcohol and other drugs. Increases in first-year-student hall populations were strongly related to unhealthy coping behaviors. Recommendations included action plans for residence-hall directors to increase their healthy coping behaviors and reduce unhealthy behaviors.
