The Effectiveness of Using STAR Math to Improve PSSA Math Scores
Holub, Sherry L.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Delaware Valley University
This is a quantitative study examining whether STAR Math, a student monitoring system, can improve PSSA Math scores. The experimental school used STAR Math during the 2015-2016 school year in grouping students for remediation and intervention. The control school used traditional curriculum measures to group students for remediation and intervention. Both schools educate grades four, five, and six. A Pearson r correlation was used to compare STAR Math percentile ranks with 2016 PSSA Math Scores. The average correlation for the experimental school was high at .85. Transiency was controlled by eliminating any set of student scores that was incomplete for either school. 2014-2015 PSSA Math scores were compared to 2015-2016 PSSA Math scores using a Paired t test with a cohort approach. Each cohort of student scores was matched from year-to-year to compute an increase or decrease per student. This information was then averaged per grade level and by school. The results of the Paired t test do not indicate a clear increase due to the intervention of STAR Math. There was an average statistical increase of 36.09 points for grade 6 of the experimental group. This increase could have been caused by STAR Math or outside factors. Repetition of this study with larger samples would increase the body of knowledge relevant to STAR Math. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
