In fall 2015, U.S community colleges enrolled about 7.2 million for-credit students. During the same year, community colleges awarded 806,766 associate degrees and 516,820 certificates. The new Humanities Indicators report from the American Academy of Arts and Sciences shows a significant increase in associate degrees awarded in the humanities, particularly to minority students (African-American, Hispanic/Latino and Native American). In 1989, about 12.9 percent of humanities credentials were awarded to minority students, compared to 32.1 percent in 2015, which is a 149 percent increase. The share of baccalaureate of humanities awarded to minorities was 22 percent for the same year. Humanities credentials awarded to underrepresented minority students were also higher than any other category, such as health/medical (25 percent), or vocational and professional fields (29 percent).
