Missouri School Superintendent Perceptions of Year-Round School Calendars

The purpose of this study is to synthesize perceptions of Missouri superintendents with regards to year-round school calendars and correlate them to the four themes of Time, Student Learning and Achievement, District Cost, and Family Cost and Support. The idea behind year-round school calendars is that by going to school throughout the year with longer breaks after each session and a shorter break in the summer, students will not become bored with their studies and will have less time to forget what they have learned over the summer months, so their teachers do not have to spend the first month of school reviewing what the students learned the year before (Svensen, n.d.). The research study was designed to find out how superintendents in Missouri perceive year-round school calendars in terms of Time, District Cost, Family Cost and Support, and Student Learning and Achievement. Seventy-nine Missouri superintendents answered a questionnaire regarding the four emergent themes. While the low response rate did not allow for an in-depth statistical analysis, they did yield useful information. The findings on the main research question regarding administrator's perceptions of year-round school calendars was that the majority of Missouri superintendents perceived positively the areas of Time and Student Learning and Achievement as reasons for changing to a year-round calendar. The superintendents had a more neutral perception of Family Cost and Support, and a negative perception toward District Cost as they related to changing to a year-round school. Because of the low response, the findings on the sub-question of whether administrators' perceptions were affected by their gender, location of school, or percentage of free/reduced lunch percentages were inconclusive. There was no apparent difference in responses based on gender. However, superintendents from urban settings tended toward more positive ratings than rural or suburban locations. And finally, there were no significant differences in the rating in most areas according to superintendents from schools with different percentages of free/reduced lunches. As a final point, research could be conducted involving community members where year-round calendars have been implemented to provide information on advantages and disadvantages that resulted from the change.
