The Relationship between Self-Compassion and Sleep in the College Population
Bricklin-Small, David
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, William James College
Quality sleep is something which many people, notably those in the college population, fail to get. It is well known that poor sleep quality can lead to adverse functional outcomes in daily life. It is important to understand what factors are associated with better sleep quality and less adverse outcomes. The primary aim of this study was to explore the relationship between self-compassion and sleep in the college population, with survey responses from 183 college students included in data analyses. Significant correlations were found between self-compassion and sleep quality, and between self-compassion and functional outcomes associated with sleep: higher self-compassion was related to lower negative sleep quality, and lower negative outcomes. Despite this robust finding, self-compassion did not appear to mitigate the negative impact of poor quality sleep on functional outcomes. This indicated that even students high in self-compassion would likely have negative functional outcomes if they have poor quality sleep. Additionally, an unanticipated finding of this study was that the construct of over-identification (antithetical to mindfulness) predicted functional outcomes associated with sleep, implying that the combination of poor quality sleep and a tendency to over-identify with one's difficult thoughts, emotions, or experiences may be particularly harmful in terms of leading negative outcomes. Interpretations and clinical implications of these results are discussed. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
