The Impact of Mentorship on At-Risk African American Males' Persistence, Perception of Achievement, and Post Graduate Job Placement at a Middle Tennessee University
Lavallais, Thomas
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Trevecca Nazarene University
This study attempted to measure the impact of mentorship on at-risk African American male's undergraduates' persistence, perception of achievement, and their post-graduate job placement. The results based on a sample size of 70 indicated that a statistically significant relationship does exist between the persistence rate of the control and treatment groups. However, there was no significant difference in the control and treatment group's perception of achievement, indicating that both groups positively valued mentorship and would actively participate in being mentored if it was offered to them. Furthermore, a survey was given to Four to six year alumni, who were considered at-risk African American males, on the impact of mentorship on careers and graduate school after graduation. The results based on 41 participants indicate that the participants positively correlated mentorship to their development and direction on being the best possible candidates for the job and entry into graduate school.
