This research study explored possible relationships of professional mental health counselors who have experienced a phenomenon called posttraumatic growth (PTG), which is a positive cognitive and emotional change that stems from surviving a traumatic life crisis. The current study aimed to investigate a connection of PTG in professional counselors to empathy and hope which are two other constructs with positive cognitive and affective components. Participants were recruited from Maryland Board of Counselors and Therapists and the Maryland Counseling Association. One hundred and fourteen individuals participated in this study and after cleaning up data and exclusions, a total of 94 participants (N = 94) met criteria. A t test was used to determine if there was a statistical significant difference in PTG in counselors with a trauma history and counselors without a trauma history. This hypothesis was supported. Also, this study sought to determine if personal trauma history between counselors and PTG, was statistically significant predictors of empathy and hope as well as if there was a relationship with respect to their personal factor of gender and professional factor of clinical education.
