Handy, Rebecca Carranza
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Our Lady of the Lake University
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between leadership skills and academic performance among dyslexic students. The sample for the present study was 103 dyslexic children in grades 3 through 8th. These students attended a school in Austin, Texas that solely educates dyslexic students. The researcher administered the Leadership Skills Checklist to the dyslexia teachers of these students to examine the relationship between the leadership skills of these students and their academic performance. Results of the present study indicated that leadership skills were positively associated with both grade point average (GPA) and with the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Reading scores. Leadership skills scores also accounted for 20% of the variance in GPA, beyond the effects of the control variables. Results of all findings are discussed with respect to improving the educational outcomes of dyslexic students. The study indicates leadership skills may improve the educational outcomes of dyslexic students if a leadership training component is added to the already existing dyslexia programs.
