The Transition out of College for Highly Engaged Undergraduates within 2 Years after Graduation Compared to Unengaged Students

In this mixed-methods study, the researcher examined the difference in the transitions out of college and the adjustment for recent graduates who were highly engaged within their campus communities compared with those who were unengaged while in college. Recent graduates within the last 2 academic years from 3 small or medium private colleges and universities in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States of America were surveyed and interviewed. Unengaged students had a different undergraduate experience from highly engaged students. The feelings of belonging and social connectedness to the institution and people were different for each group. The details of both groups are discussed throughout this study. After undergraduate students complete their degrees, they will transition from their experiences as undergraduate students to being graduate students, young professionals, and military personnel. Although colleges and universities are developing transition programs, these programs are not covering all of the areas necessary to create the most successful and easy transition out of college. Most graduating students are unaware that the transition to life after college involves not only the ending of academic life, but also the changing of social and interpersonal aspects of life. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to discover (a) whether the differences between each group continues into the transition out of college, (b) the nature of the transition differences, and (c) what the 2 groups of graduates are doing to adjust to the transition. With the results, I demonstrated that the differences between the groups continue throughout their transition out of college and that the highly engaged group has a more challenging interpersonal transition than does the unengaged group of recent graduates.
