Rogers, Tarsha
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Regent University
TED Talks has become a worldwide phenomenon attended by many at its conferences, TEDx community-based events, TED.com, and YouTube videos. Previous studies have delved into TED Talks' impact in the educational sector, as it has been used by many educators and students alike in the classroom. Utilizing a qualitative exploratory approach, this study examined the TED enterprise from an audience perspective particularly for its ability to inspire, motivate, and influence people to make changes in their lives and ultimately, the world around them. TED's tagline is: "Ideas worth spreading" with a goal of changing the world. The findings of this study suggest that TED is indeed influencing the lives of people who engage with the talks whether they attend the live events or interact with TED Talks in an online platform. Findings also suggest that people from all walks of life use TED for multiple purposes ranging from professional use, entrepreneurial endeavors, knowledge and learning, and networking. Finally, the study also suggests that, at a deeper level, people experience transformational experiences or shifts in perspective or world view on various issues as a result of interacting with TED.
