An Examination of Video-Based Coaching to Support Psychological Factors of Online Dissertation Students
Ames, Cathrine D.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
Unique challenges affecting the influx of online doctoral learners create opportunities to enhance their experience by mitigating limited contact. This quantitative causal-comparative and correlational study examined differences based on frequency and duration of video-based coaching doctoral learners received from their dissertation chairs, at a private southwestern university. A correlational design supported investigation into whether video coaching predicted social presence, research self-efficacy, and isolation, when mediated by motivation. Data were obtained from video usage records and an online survey (N = 201) consisting of Social Presence Scale, Self-Efficacy in Research Measured Short, Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale, and Intrinsic Motivation Inventory. MANOVA and multiple regression showed no statistical significance between learners who received more or less video coaching F(3, 103) = 0.125, p = 0.95. Video duration did not predict social presence, p = 0.807; research self-efficacy, p = 0.920; isolation, p = 0.902, nor did video frequency predict social presence, p = 761; research self-efficacy, p = 0.433; or isolation, p = 0.938, when mediated by motivation. Intercorrelations showed social presence correlated with research self-efficacy (duration, r = 0.375, p = 0.001; frequency, r = 0.457, p = 0.006); isolation (frequency, r = 0.234, p = 0.007); and motivation (frequency, r = 0.190, p = 0.031); research self-efficacy correlated with isolation (duration, r = -0.499, p = 0.006; frequency, r = -0.370, p = 0.000); and motivation (duration, r = 0.420, p = 0.032; frequency, r = 0.292, p = 0.001); and isolation correlated with motivation (duration, r = -0.504, p = 0.000; frequency, r = 0.520, p = 0.000). Intercorrelations indicated that further research is needed. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
