IT Employer and Graduate Assessments Regarding Preparedness in Skills of IT College Graduates Offered Employment
Waldrop, Gerry L.
ProQuest LLC, D.I.T. Dissertation, Capella University
Securing employment poses a significant problem for information technology (IT) college and university graduates. An overarching purpose of this research was to inform IT faculty, IT hiring managers and IT graduates of which 42 critical IT skills best predict the offering of jobs to graduates and how long it takes graduates to receive such offers. This study identified gaps in knowledge concerning those skills that are most critical based on IT hiring managers' perspectives and the viewpoints of IT graduates on their preparedness in these skills. A quantitative non-experimental approach is used, employing a binomial logistics regression and a multiple linear regression design. A sample of 350 IT hiring managers and 223 IT graduates provided the basis for exploring the two research questions. The results of the binomial logistics regression testing showed three variables (artificial intelligence/expert systems; communication skills (oral); globalization issues, trends, requirements) predicted IT hiring manager offers of employment whereas the other 39 independent variables did not. The multiple linear regression (stepwise forward) indicated two variables, CASE tools (use and understanding) and organizational knowledge, predicted the time period required for the IT graduates to obtain job offers whereas the other 40 independent variables did not.
