Incorporating Physical Activity with Dialectical Behavior Therapy to Treat Non Suicidal Self Injury in Freshman Female University Students
Lovelady, Tiffany T.
ProQuest LLC, D.P.C. Dissertation, Mississippi College
As Non-Suicidal Self Injury (NSSI) is increasing in prevalence among adolescents and young adults, College Counseling Centers (CCC's) are tasked with treating this population of students. CCC's are designed to provide counseling services to all students seeking assistance and therapy is typically relegated to short term psychotherapy with counseling sessions being led by counseling trainees. Historically, clients who engage in NSSI behaviors are diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder and considered difficult to treat by counselors who provide individual and group therapy. Various evidence based therapies are incorporated to address NSSI behaviors, yet Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is proven to be efficacious in the treatment of NSSI. The purpose of this paper is to implement the Developmental Research Utilization Model to construct a counseling program within a university setting integrating Dialectical Behavior Therapy and a regimented physical activity program to extinguish or reduce NSSI behaviors.
