Corporate Social Responsibility: Practices of Ethics in Higher Education Institutions
Law, Marla S.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Concordia University Chicago
The purpose of this study was to explore and examine perceptions among public and private higher education leaders in Pennsylvania regarding their institutions Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) codes of conduct, ethics training programs, and practices of ethics. Highly publicized misconduct incidents warranted the need for scrutiny of the effectiveness of institutional codes of conduct, ethics training programs, and practices of ethics. Although formal ethics guidelines were introduced over 20 years ago, many compliance efforts remain ineffective, and institutional crime persists. Given the publicized number of leader indiscretions, there was little known about the perceptions of codes of conduct, ethics training programs, and practices of ethics among higher education leaders. There was also a lack of empirical or theoretical support in literature about the impact of ethical guidelines. The research approach for this study was a quantitative exploratory, cross sectional survey design. Pennsylvania Higher education leaders from six private and six public institutions who worked in a variety of leadership positions were surveyed. Leaders were asked to respond to a survey developed by Marla S. Law adapted from questionnaires using the Perceived Leader Integrity Scale PLIS (Craig & Gustafson, 1998) and Graham's (2009) instrument on Ethics Training and the Perceived Role of Ethics and Social Responsibility (PRESOR) instrument.
